Sensing U.S. weakness, China casts itself as fixer of global problems

China has no ambition to take over the mantle of leadership from the United States, its Foreign Minister says.

But Beijing is boldly positioning itself as mediator and problem-solver to the world’s most insoluble problems, abandoning the decades it spent protesting its lack of desire to intervene in the quagmires outside its gates.

Sensing weakness in the U.S.-led liberal democratic order, China is stepping forward with detailed plans to defuse tensions on the Korean peninsula, bring wealth to Africa, create new pathways to peace in the Middle East and rekindle international trade. It has cast itself as an honest broker and reliable partner, with better ideas for achieving results than Washington.

  • ISIS destroyed the historic tomb of the prophet of Jonah in 2014
  • The terror group believe that worshipping shrines is against Islam
  • But the tomb was retaken by Iraqi army forces earlier this year
  • Archaeologists sent in to assess the damage found a palace buried underneath

Archaeologists assessing the damage caused by Islamic State militants to the tomb of the prophet of Jonah have made a surprise discovery.

Experts found a previously untouched palace dating back to 600BC buried under the ruins of Jonah’s desecrated resting place.

The Nebi Yunus shrine – containing what Muslims and Christians believe to be the tomb of Jonah or ‘Yunnus’ as he is known in the Koran – was destroyed by ISIS militants in July 2014.

Weeks after overrunning Mosul and much of Iraq’s Sunni Arab heartland, ISIS militants rigged the shrine and blew it up, sparking global outrage.

ISIS militants believe giving special veneration to tombs and relics is against the teachings of Islam.

The shrine holding Jonah’s tomb is located on top of a hill in eastern Mosul, a city in northern Iraq with a population of around 660,000 that was retaken from ISIS control by Iraqi army forces last month.

Archaeologists have been picking through ancient rubble left behind by the terror group as they attempt to salvage surviving artefacts.

Canada sees third straight trade surplus; gains ‘no longer a blip’

Canada posted a third consecutive monthly trade surplus in January, the first such stretch since 2014, in another signal that the economy is gaining momentum after slumping for more than two years due to low oil prices.

Statistics Canada on Tuesday reported a surplus of $807-million, which slightly exceeded analysts’ forecasts of a $700-million surplus. Statscan revised December’s surplus sharply lower to $447-million from an initial $923-million.

The last time Canada recorded trade surpluses for three months in a row was between July and September 2014.

The value of exports rose 0.5 per cent in January while volumes expanded 1.0 per cent. Imports slipped 0.3 per cent but volumes climbed 2.5 per cent.

LAS VEGAS — A hunt for the killer of two sleeping homeless men in Las Vegas led to an unusual attempted murder charge Tuesday and a legal debate about criminal intent, when a man was accused of trying to kill a mannequin used as a decoy near the downtown site where the men had died of head injuries.

The charge was lodged against 30-year-old Shane Allen Schindler at a hearing in which a justice of the peace ordered him to undergo a mental competency evaluation.

Clark County Public Defender Phil Kohn derided the charge of attempted murder as “a legal impossibility,” saying someone can’t kill an inanimate object.

LAS VEGAS — Prosecutors began casting a former mixed martial arts fighter named War Machine on Monday as violent in his relationship with his porn star girlfriend and murderous when he found her asleep one morning with another man in her bedroom.

Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver’s defence attorney, Jay Leiderman, didn’t deny during opening statements that a fight took place early one morning in August 2014.

But he characterized Christy Mack and Koppenhaver as “two damaged people” — each with an adopted public name, deep image insecurities and a co-dependent relationship that revolved around sex, constant attention and internet personas that exploded into violence.

“It was a co-dependency that was bound to erupt at some time,” Leiderman told the state court jury during opening statements in a trial expected to last a couple of weeks.

China on Wednesday proposed that North Korea could suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for a halt in joint military drills conducted by the U.S. and South Korea.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi likened escalating tensions between the North and Washington and Seoul to “two accelerating trains, coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way.”

“The question is: Are the two sides really ready for a head-on collision?” Wang told reporters. “Our priority now is to flash the red light and apply the brakes on both trains.

Wang said China proposes that as a first step to defusing the looming crisis, the North might suspend its nuclear and missile activities if the U.S. and South Korea halted their military exercises.

“This suspension-for-suspension can help us break out of the security dilemma and bring the parties back to the negotiating table,” Wang said, describing the approach as trying to address all parties’ concerns in a “synchronized and reciprocal” manner.

Smart TVs and cars could be used for spying: WikiLeaks report

NEW YORK – Maybe the CIA is spying on you through your television set after all.

Documents released by WikiLeaks allege a CIA surveillance program that targets everyday gadgets ranging from smart TVs to smartphones to cars. Such snooping, WikiLeaks said, could turn some of these devices into recorders that could snoop on everyday conversations — and could also circumvent data-scrambling encryption on communications apps such as Facebook’s WhatsApp.

The organization is, for now, withholding details on the specific hacks used “until a consensus emerges” on the nature of the CIA’s program and how the methods should be “analyzed, disarmed and published.” But WikiLeaks — a non-profit that routinely publishes confidential documents, frequently from government sources — claims that the data and documents it obtained reveal a broad …

White House corrects Trump’s erroneous Gitmo tweet

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Tuesday acknowledged that President Trumperroneously blamed the Obama administration for releasing 122 “vicious” prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

Early Tuesday, Trump accused former President Barack Obama of releasing 122 captured terrorists back onto the battlefield.

122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!

However, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence says that 113 of the 122 former detainees who have taken up arms again were released before Obama took office.

“Obviously the president meant in totality, the number that had been released on the battlefield – that have been released from Gitmo since individuals have been released,” Spicer told reporters on Tuesday. “That is correct.”

‘Zero political agenda’: Trump’s pick to lead Russia probe comes Obama-approved

Rod Rosenstein, facing Senate hearing Tuesday for role of deputy attorney general, has ‘rock-solid ethics’

Rod Rosenstein, the next-in-line litigator to oversee investigations into Donald Trump’s campaign ties with Russian officials, has already achieved a rare trifecta: unanimous approval from the three most recent presidents.

That bipartisan confidence may convince a Senate panel on Tuesday to advance his confirmation as the next deputy attorney general, particularly amid trepidation over the White House’s relationship with the Russians.

George W. Bush tapped Rosenstein as the U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland in 2005. Barack Obama’s administration trusted him enough to keep him on as the top federal prosecutor there for another eight years.

“He’s a straight shooter when it comes to the discretionary aspects of his job,” says Baltimore criminal lawyer Steve Silverman, who has known Rosenstein for at least a decade.

To those with misgivings about how a Trump appointee might cave to political pressures, Silverman has reassuring words about the Harvard Law grad’s reputation.
